A little bit about me !

Hello! I'm Saara or Fell, whichever you might know me by, and welcome to my page!

This site is a bit of a kitchen sink, in that I will post just about whatever I damn well please, haha. But the main themes are Finnish folklore and archaeology, my second–hand playing card collection, my tabletop game titled Unhola, and even occasional blogging!

About my card collection

It's been a long time since I last counted how many decks of cards I have, but I estimate there to be 350–400 of them by now.

What I love about collecting playing cards is the sheer absurdity of "why would you make a deck about this?". Beyond just their interesting history and the delightful challenge in trying to figure out their manufacturing year, they are an interesting "low cost product" that especially in the years past, was a very cheap way to promote all kinds of stuff. That's why I'm interested in them, trash that they mostly are.

About Finnish folklore

I have a bachelor's degree in Finnish archaeology and a long-time interest in local folklore – an interest borne from my rather rural upbringing, where certain superstitions were alive and well. The reason why I write about these topics in English is the simple fact that very little information regarding these subjects is available in English at all.

While I add my sources to the end of each article, I do not really practice "critical reading" in the sense that I'd try and determine the exact truthfulness of what I have read. I believe that this is the sort of field where exact "truth" is a secondary matter to how things were experienced and felt about in the past, and therefore, I present them as they have been presented to me – I trust the authors I have chosen to read from.
